"Hermit's Kitchen, Padmasambhava Cave, Upper Mustang, Nepal, May 2017" - 11x 14 Archival Pigment Print
“The Cave is said to be the site of enlightenment for Guru Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche, the "Lotus Born", the one who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. Located in the once forbidden Buddhist Kingdom of Mustang where it is said that "the soul of the man is still considered to be as real as the feet he walks on", the Padmasambhava Cave bares the patina of centuries with devotional inscriptions and offerings left behind by the few that can manage the arduous pilgrimage. The lone-monk-caretaker related to us that seasons pass with no visitors. Mustang became part of Nepal in 1950 and was opened to 500 visitors a year in 1992. In May of 2017 the Chinese and Nepali governments entered into negotiations focused on allowing China to build the "New Silk Road" through Mustang ultimately allowing China continuous road access and direct commercial trade with India.”
Trained in the sciences, Paul Harbaugh received much of his post graduate education on the road spending the past forty years documenting and collecting material culture, photography and ethnographic art. His interest in fine art photography began in 1974, while representing Santa Fe photographers Laura Gilpin and Ernest Knee. He has authored, edited and illustrated books dealing with American frontier history, Mayan ethnology, fine art photography and Soviet history.
