LEICAS AND SCOTCH: A CONVERSATION AND BOOK SIGNING WITH ERIC MEOLA
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 3 PM
RSVP
ERIC MEOLA studied photography at the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University and graduated with a BA in English Literature. Meola’s photographs are included in the archive of the American Society of Media Photographers, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the International Center of Photography in New York, and the George Eastman Museum. His previous books include Last Places on Earth (GRAPHIS, 2004), Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (Insight Editions, 2006), INDIA: In Word & Image (Welcome Books, 2011), and FIERCE BEAUTY: Storms of the Great Plains (IMAGES Publishing, 2019). He has received numerous awards, including “Advertising Photographer of the Year” in 1986 from the American Society of Media Photographers, a “Power of the Image” George Eastman award in 2014, and 2023 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America.
Eric Meola’s new book, BENDING LIGHT: The Moods of Color, showcases his use of light and color. In a five-decade career that defines the use of color as art, Meola examines the history of color and redefines it in the medium of photography. In dozens of stories and anecdotes, he recounts his journey using color, its symbolism, and how it affects our moods.
As he explains: "Telling the stories behind the photographs is my way to revisit the creative process, both as a means of introspection as well asHe explains: "Telling the stories behind the photographs is my way to revisit the creative process, both as a means of introspection and expression. Although the end image is still a photograph, the story of its creation and how and why it came to be is part of every photographer’s psyche. Photography has always been a way for me to create what I feel, and feel as I create. Light and color are my subjects as much as the subject itself. They resonate with our moods, reflect our emotions, and define the way we see.”
In photographs of landscapes, portraits, still-lifes, and abstracts, the layout moves from the macro to the monumental: A cowboy on his horse saunters through a prairie fire, a model hovers on a tube of neon, a tornado spins at night in South Dakota, a lizard weaves through an emerald and diamond ring, an acid yellow-green motel sits at night in the California desert, and prismatic light refracts in vibrant colors along a geometric staircase.
Meola’s work is informed by the desire to create visual metaphors with his imagery. Whether intimate portraits, unique landscapes, or color-saturated abstracts, his use of geometry within the frame of the photograph creates an instantly recognizable tension. In awarding him its Lifetime Achievement Award, The Professional Photographers of America noted that "Eric Meola continues to give back to the industry and champions photography as a visual language capable of great emotion. He’s a photographer with a love affair for color, light, and artistic freedom.”
BENDING LIGHT: The Moods of Color 200 pages, 104 images.
IMAGES Publishing Group, September 25, 2024.
An introduction by Carol McCusker, Ph.D., on the history of color photography, and an essay by Eric Meola titled “The Poets of Light and Color,” in which he explores the meaning of color, and how it affects our moods.
As he says: “I am obsessed with the mundane and the supernatural, the commonplace and the rare, the ordinary and the spiritual. What is important to me is not what my eyes see, but what my mind’s eye sees; it’s that third eye that has blessed me with intention and demanded invention. Color and light are my subjects as much as the subject itself.”

LEICAS & SCOTCH: A CONVERSATION with kisa kavass
SUNDAY, July 21, 3 - 5 PM
KISA KAVASS
Photographer. Storyteller. Poet.
Kisa Kavass was born in Adelaide, South Australia. At 5, her family moved to the U.S., exploring various states before settling down In Nashville, Tennessee.Their travels gave her a strong curiosity about the world, nature and art, and the understanding that they all are intertwined.
Her passion for creating and art led her to photography and she has worked as a professional portrait and fine art photographer for over twenty years. She has taught workshops on bookmaking, oil hand-tinting and alternative Polaroid film processes. Her fine art work has been featured in magazines and in group and solo shows across the United States.
With years of darkroom experience, Kisa now has embraced the digital darkroom, keeping a hands-on approach with her unique mixed media pieces and each fine art print. She has now incorporated the ancient technique of encaustic, applying heated beeswax to her mixed media pieces.
Kisa volunteers with animal rescue groups both as a foster for dogs needing adoption and as a photographer. Her love of animals led to travels to the western U.S. in search of wild horses where she was impressed with the raw beauty of the lands and the magical wild mustangs. Wild horses are threatened by round ups from the Bureau of Land Management despite protections in place since 1971. Kisa hopes that her images will inspire everyone to become more engaged in the plight of the herds and protecting our wild lands. She also documents domestic horse rescue in Tennessee, horses in need of protection from abuse in need of love and care to help them begin new lives. She shares the feeling of connection with these majestic animals through her fine art photography.

Cynthia West - “Seed Keepers” Poetry Reading & Book Signing
Sunday, April 7, 2024, 3 pm - 5 pm
Cynthia West, an iconic Santa Fe Poet and Artist, is well known for her visionary realist paintings and poetry. Cynthia is also skilled in photography, digital imaging, and book arts. Her home of fifty years, where she lives with her husband and family, is a healing center, as well as her studio and gallery. Many people travel great distances to be restored by her remarkable art and gardens. This event marks the launch of Cynthia’s latest book of poems titled: “Seed Keepers”. About the book, Nina Simons, Co-founder of Bioneers and author of Nature, Culture and the Sacred writes: “Your book of poetry, Seed Keepers, is blessing my heart/mind/spirit wide open, and causing me to feel admiration of your courage, skill and eloquence as a poet. It is at once raw, real, lyrical, elegant, and profound, an offering of medicine that’s pure and beautiful as all your transmissions have been. Many thanks.” Cynthia West says, “Clouds, shadows, and branches drop clues, luring me to reach deeper than skin and bones, to touch the essence inside the appearance, the nothing that holds everything in its hands. Patience has years of seeking, one step after another in the dust, pathways that lead to water. My hand and eye never stop probing the changing shapes, now here, now gone, now flesh, now ghosts. Subtle hints flash in and out of form, quicker than loss or gain. Blown here and there, I coax the tree within to show its face. The view is turning, turning in and out of reach.” |
LEICAS & SCOTCH: IN CONVERSATION WITH GABRIELLA MARKS
SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 3 PM
Santa Fe photographer Gabriella Marks landed in New Mexico nearly two decades ago on intuition, but knows why she stays: the high desert light, lenticular clouds, the humbling experience of growing plants in the dry clay soil and ancient pueblo pottery shards in the garden, and perhaps with most resonance: living in a community with a deep legacy that to this day values the creation and curation of art.
Gabriella’s work focuses primarily on editorial portraiture and food and has been featured on the covers and within countless regional and national publications, as well as in the permanent collection of the New Mexico History Museum.
Gabriella serves as Chair of the National Board of Directors of ASMP.

2023 EVENTS
GILBERTO GUZMAN - ARTIST'S RECEPTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 5:30 pM
Muralist Gilberto Guzman has established his deserved place in history with a replica of his "Multicultural" mural on display at Vladem Contemporary, but little is known about his works on canvas which he also painted throughout his life. This month a retrospective of his work can be found on display in three locations throughout the city with an opening reception on September 29 at 5:30 pm at Edition ONE Gallery, and through October 31 at the Santa Fe Community Gallery, and El Museo Cultural.
Guzman's paintings resemble the style of the Mexican Masters and were undoubtedly influenced by the work of Diego Rivera; having lived in San Francisco and LA. His paintings depict the rich multicultural and agricultural experiences of growing up in East LA and his childhood home in Cucamonga, San Bernardino Valley. Guzman says that his artistic passion was sparked when he was hired to clean a studio and encountered a painting. He was never offered art in school and couldn’t fathom this painting and how it had the ability to depict life as a 3D illusion! From that time on he was driven to become an artist. He pursued art and after military service took courses and was accepted to the San Francisco Academy of Art. He settled in Santa Fe in the 70s where he produced notable murals that still exist and worked quietly as an artist. He took dishwasher jobs to pay the bills, and when his work was done, he would build and paint canvases ultimately creating “The Guzman Paintings.” |
Godfrey speaks - a special night
Tuesday, April 4, 6 pm
Come to Edition ONE Gallery for an exclusive fundraising event. We are supporting the GoFundMe campaign to support the filmmaking work and livelihood of Godfrey Reggio and his wife Marti. Over the last 40 years, Reggio’s films have mirrored the psyche of the modern world while revealing the beauty of the living world - Koyaanisqatsi, 1982, with a score by Philip Glass, exposed in a visceral way the effects of our culture on the world in image and music. The new film Once Within a Time, 2022, captures the current multiple crises in stunning visuals, accessing subconscious knowings. The new film is projected to come out in the Summer of 2023. During his lifetime, he has focused on his art. His films have all been created within a not-for-profit documentary status. Godfrey has put their art over financial gain. Godfrey's ongoing creativity rises in public speaking, writing, drawing, and mentoring. Currently, he needs support, especially at age 83, as he is in a somewhat fragile state. Funds will be used for his daily living expenses to get through this period where there is no current funding. We will be screening Koyaanisqatsi with an introduction by Godfrey himself. This extraordinary venue has 3100 sq. feet of open space all designed to create an experience that is uniquely Santa Fe to honor this long-time resident. To donate, scan the QR Code below. Sponsored by Edition ONE Gallery and the Santa Fe Art Experience. Parking is available onsite and next door for up to 50 cars. We will be serving light refreshments. |
