Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial. On December 7, 1941, the world's focus shifted to the Pacific Ocean with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entrance to World War II. What isn't as well known is how 1200 miles away a remote stretch of sand known as Midway Atoll was also attacked. Six months later it was attacked a second time , and unlike the first battle, it was a decisive victory and the turning point of the war. 75 years later Midway is once again at the front lines of our changing planet.  It is a vibrant symbol of how we can find a balance of honoring our history and heritage with our responsibilities of the future.
