“Contemporarily Indigenous" is how Roberta Begaye describes her artwork; painting bold colors of medicine as "a blending of my traditional upbringing with continued personal and professional growth in these changing times, I put lots of love and careful thought into all I do. I hope you enjoy the stories of me, and my culture in the weaving of my paintings.
I am Dine’ (Navajo), a five-fingered being. I am To’dich’ii’nii, Bitterwater. I am born of Nashtezhi Tabaahi, Zuni-Edgewater. My maternal grandparents are Kiyaa’a’anii, Towering House. My paternal grandparents are To’dich’ii’nii.” Roberta hails from the Navajo Nation, born in Fort Defiance, Arizona and raised in Kayenta, Arizona; attended Monument Valley High School and transferred to and graduated from Ganado High School, both schools in the Navajo Nation. She is descendent of medicine people and traditional rug weavers, both maternal and paternal grand and great-grandparents.
