This photograph of the Grateful Dead was taken at the height of the "American Cultural Revolution" in 1967.
"The Dead symbolized to me the mutant chemical transformation of the new age people of the time. The new alien earth people, the small group of which I was a part, and which the media of the day would label "The Love Generation".
This was the second attempt to make the picture. On a previous attempt, the police stopped us. I had to round up the Dead and five people, who were to hold mirrors, which is how the effect of light in the faces was made. When we arrived at the location, Daly City, the police showed up and ran us off. Rounding up that herd again was a major feat. It was done and the picture was finally made.
That Grateful Dead picture was made into a poster and distributed around the country. It had a strong impact. It became an icon of the time and set in the minds of American young people a sense of the movement that was taking place in California." – Bob Seidemann
