I thought Bob smoking a joint with a classic approach to portraiture might strike the balance between the irreverence of rock and roll and his status as an icon of the psychedelic era. We shot a roll of film, and he took one hit per 12 frames. He passed the joint to me and said, “I’m am so stoned,” and I handed it off to the Dead’s lyricist Robert Hunter. I was surprised when the record company used the photo for publicity, and was thrilled when it was requested for the permanent collection of the Grateful Dead Archives.
